In addition to allowing a higher density of moored boats, the fore and aft
mooring system in Avalon (and all of Catalina Island) keeps your boat
pointed into the (sometimes) heavy swells. I have anchored there when the
wind kept me at ninety degrees to the swell and it was horrible.
And BTW, it may not be legal, but friends can reserve moorings, with some
subterfuge no doubt.
And finally a system that allows the market to command a million dollars for
your leashold rights to something the public owns, sucks IMHO.
So there is much to admire about the technical prowess of the Catalina
mooring system, but much to dislike as well.
