Bob, I can not speak on the NMEA sentence question but on the wiring, we connected our autopilot which uses a BNC cable, to our Garmin GPS and later Standard Horizon plotter using two wires soldered to the center pin of the coax and the outer sheild and the wire length was about 7 feet and the coax only 3 feet.
