T&T: RO membranes

Need a little deeper knowledge about RO membranes. Assume they have moderate
use and are flushed with fresh RO water at least every 2 weeks when not in
service, does a membrane have a service life? Is it dependant on hours of use
or gallons of water produceg or age? Do they fail catastrophically, pumping
salt water into your tank or do they grow less and less efficient over time
until they no longer make fresh water?
