My windlass wanted to kick off chain with wire ties until I turned the "nub"
into the center of the link and wove the long tails into the links. This
allows easy viewing of the ties and no jumping.
My coding system isn't secret, I use 25' marks and they are red, white and
blue, with black at the 100's. I seldom forget if I have 50' or 150' of chain
out so that hasn't been a problem.

After years of using cable ties to mark the length of my anchor chain my new
windlass will not accept the cable ties. I am planning on painting the
length indications on the chain. This is 10 year old BBB chain in
reasonable shape.
