T&T: A Radar Question

In talking about radar target discrimination ability, please remember that
the type and KW of the antenna play a significant role. The same radar head
with an open wave-guide antenna will perform better than a domed antenna.
The higher the power (within reason) and the wider the antenna, the better
the discrimination. For example a 4KW antenna is likely to be better for a
40 foot pleasure craft than a 2KW. Couple that with an open wave-guide
antenna and you "see" better. Used sounds like a great idea. In my area (NC)
I have not seen them offered, but I hear they have them in the PNW.

Radar, I will often say: Go down and see what the Fishing boats are
using...

If you are not sold on the integrated units, you can get great values on
Furuno non-integrated radars used. Mostly as take-outs from folks
upgrade to the newest units. Ala a Furuno 1932 can be had for $400 -
$500, with usual cautions around used anything. Even a good 4-6KW / 10"
CRT one can be found for $1,200 - $1,500.

This is the way I went for my radar.
