T&T: Radar Detectors at Sea

I've received a couple of comments from folks who drive around marinas and
haven't gotten any detections on their radar detectors. I also got a reply
from a gent who used to use them on offshore sailboat races with good
success.

I suspect that to reduce false alarms, the newer generation of radar
detectors have become a lot more sophisticated in the way they detect
doppler traffic radars. They are able to discriminate between a doppler
radar and a simple pulse radar. I received another comment that the new
detectors are very directional. My current unit is advertised to detect
traffic radars either in front or behind your vehicle. The directional
problem could be solved with a simple wide-angle reflector, but if the units
can discriminate between traffic and marine radars there's no point.

I'm going to see if I can find an old unit to test along side my fairly new
detector. No real point in this other than to keep an idle mind busy.
