This discussion of dinghies and documentation opens a couple other
questions.
I live in Louisiana, have my driver's license, mailing address and dink
registered here. Big boat's documented. I established a mail forwarding
service in Islamorada. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to tie this whole
mess up when we sell the house and go cruising. I'll need a driver's license
and dink registration in some state. Voter registration. Address for my
documentation. If I become a Florida resident, will I be forced to pay taxes
on Cigano who was originally purchased in TX and never taxed?
Scott Shares:
a. You MUST maintain a residence someplace, it's the only way to
solve MANY problems. You will be amazed at the number of places that need
your "residence address". Do you have a friend, family member that will let
you use their address? Rent a closet of shelf in the garage for $1/yr or
something so you can at least say you "rent"!
b. Get your name on someone's auto policy, if you rent a car or return
to the US and can't prove you had a policy for the last 2 years you will not
get low cost auto insurance.
c. If you become a FL resident you run the risk of USE TAX, or
Personal Property Tax. GET ADVICE FROM A TAX ATTORNEY, DON'T TRUST HEAR SAY
OR LAY PERSON ADVICE (including me!)!
d. Understand and follow the laws about how long you can be in a state
without falling into their tax jeopardy.
I have to run, but this is sure to garner a lot of comment
