This did happen aprox. 6-7 years ago and the spec was written favoring
Charles xformers. At the time I was with Mastervolt that sold H wound
xformers that didn't have or require a shield. All of the sudden we were
not ABYC compliant.

Allen, I sit on the ABYC Electrical PTC where this would have happened.
What you have stated did not happen, specifications are written so that
they are overly broad in more cases that perhaps they should. You should
also be aware that all ABYC PTC meetings are open to the public, I
attended three years of them as a non member. And, if a vender wants,
they can send a representative at any time. If they cannot send a
representative, they can get on the mailing list and receive a copy of
the proposed change BEFORE it is fully accepted and "comment on it," and
attend the next meeting where comments are heard and voted on. They are
allowed to speak on their comment at the meeting. There is no way what
you propose has happened, did happen. Your source of information is
flawed, and what ever manufacturer your are speaking of has had, AND
STILL HAS the opportunity to get heard. The standard is not set in
stone, it is ever changing.

A word about new technologies, THEY ARE NEW. We have begun a components
PTC, and a high voltage PTC. The components PTC came into being when the
ABYC standard did not address the possibility of digital switching off
of a unibus with taps. Why, because it was never done before, its NEW.
It is now addressed. The same is true with high voltage, it is being
addressed for new drive systems. As are new technology inverters which
track multiple sources, and multiple frequencies, and sense load
requirements and automatically adjust their shore, battery and available
generators to the most efficient combination. All this is being done in
the open, not behind any closed doors. The wealth of information brought
forward at these meeting by truly gifted engineers and designers is
incredible. And the one idea that seams to be able to prevails is safe,
simple, affordable boating.
