T&T: ABYC Standards???

After reading some of the posts on ABYC standards and after reviewing the ABYC's weak one sentence mission statement, I really question why the ABYC thinks they have defined standards. The best I can tell, the standards are written, reviewed, and approved solely by the ABYC. Also, as far as I can tell, the ABYC is not a recognized standards body by anyone, except themselves. I'm not suggesting that their work isn't good, although it would be hard to know one way or another without spending big bucks for their "standards". What I am suggesting is that the references produced by the ABYC are solely recommendations, and not standards. It's also interesting that I could not find any certification processes for the worked performed, other than that you might equate to the work being performed by a certified technician.

I'm really not bashing ABYC. In time, assuming its membership is open to all and that recommendations aren't voted on by a company that can benefit from a given recommendation, then the ABYC recommendations may actually become standards.
