Hi Georgs: You received some very good advice from Bob. I agree that a hard
coating bottom paint is necessary. If you are not going into brackish water
and stay on Lake Ontario then Interlux Bottomcote for Fiberglas can be used.
The Act type is a couple of steps above the bottomcote. Ensure that the bottom
is prepared well. If there are bare spots with the gel coat showing through
then wipe with acetone or a similar product to remove the gel wax. If I
remember your boat correctly I doubt if there is a need for a barrier coat
especially in fresh water. However if you have the time and patience then that is a
good procedure for the future of the boats bottom.
Now for the boot line you have choices like tape or paint. If you use tape
then a good cleaning with acetone and light sanding will prepare the line for
the new tape. Buy the better quality tape rather than the low price specials.
Here is where it does not pay to save a buck or two. If you are going to
paint then a good sanding to prepare is the answer. Then use good quality masking
tape to ensure that there is no bleeding. Interlux makes a special boot line
paint in smaller cans and that is suggested as well.
If you have the time, Laurie from Mason's in Port Credit will be having a
seminar on bottom painting in their store sometime this month.
