I had the same problem with the cooling water for my reefer intake. I put a
bronze check valve inline right after the thru-hull, using a bronze hex
nipple (kind of hard to find, had to buy on the web). Problem solved.

The check valve was just the standard bronze type found at West Marine, et
al.
