T&T: Steel SCUBA tanks

Although I emailed Larry privately there are a bunch of plus's to going
steel. Bouyancy being the biggest. Alum. 80 (really 77's) require in the
order of 4 pounds weight just for the tanks. The steel (lo pressure) can be
filled higher than the dot ratings normally 3500 psi they're european
pressures. Not as big a problem when filling as overheating alum. is the
kiss of death for the tank.. You will need to be a little more careful any
water getting in the tanks when filling (something you should do anyways).
You might even want to consider going din although there are now valves
which will do both. The only plus side to alum. cylinders is their intial
price. Although we now will not fill any alum. tanks over 20 years of age as
they are now starting to have issues. I strongly recomend steel and have
only been using them for the past 15 years. Here in the shop we don't even
have 80's except for some use's as deco bottles where there bouyancy issues
are desirable.
