T&T: Inverter/davit

The davit on my boat is set up to run at 240 volts -- meaning that it
only

works when the generator is running. I would like the ability to run it

off of the batteries, even if only for an emergency.

There are European inverters that can be programmed to output 60Hz. The
Euro 230V is with one hot leg and one neutral which will run your davit.
If you want to power other loads on your boat, you can also put the
output thru a transformer and generate two 115V legs. Another option is
to take a 120V inverter and use a transformer to generate 240V. The size
of the battery bank must be looked at as well as the locked rotor
current of the davit motor, that will determine the inverter and battery
bank size. A much more expensive solution is to use two inverters
stacked to generate split phase 240V. Euro power is 230V as compared to
the US which is 240V which, in the scheme of things, doesn't mean much.

Harris
