T&T: Battery Bank Voltage

I currently have 1 bank of 4-8D, 8-volt batteries to start both engines and
the generator. The House is all on a seperate 12 volt system. The current 8D
batteries seem to be bad, so I'm thinking of changing the system. The mechanic
is suggesting we make 2 banks. One for the starboard engine and one for the
port engine and the generator. He wants to use 3-8D, 12-volt
batteries....making 36 volts in each bank. Has anybody ever done this? Will it
work, even though the 110v charger and engine generators are 32 volt. Also,
will it work with the current 32volt engine generators. The generator is also
32 volt. It is a Kohler, with a Waukasha Engine and the starter is electric in
the Kohler portion. I really don't understand that part at all though.
