What criteria do you use to determine if you need to clean your heat
exchanger? Rise in cooling temp, engine hours or a recommendation in the
owner's manual?

You normally notice a temp creep. ie it will start running a little hotter
than normal. And you will notice that it gets a little hotter every so many
hours of running time. At least that is what my engines do. it will be
especially noticeable at WOT.
