T&T: Digging a hole in the water

Bob: You make a couple of excellent observations. To wit:

"We see more and more folks who are nearing retirement and have the
"fantisy" of

buying a boat and either "going cruising" or "Doing the Loop" etc. But they

don't have years of experience. Their reference is a car, where it runs
gets

you there."

Well, that would be me except I'm not foolish enough to think a car is
anything like a boat. Although I have some boating experience I don't have
much with boats in the size range I am considering (40' 45').

"Certainly one of the goals of a list server like Trawlers and Trawlering

should be to educate people as to what is a good hull, condition,
suitability

and mechanical survey--and where to have one done."

YES, PLEASE! A wise man once said, "51% of smart is knowing what you're
dumb at". I'm smart enough to recognize my own ignorance and not too proud
to admit it. If I am ever to make my cruising fantasy a reality, I know I
have a LOT to learn. For me, learning and acquiring new skills is part of
the fun. That is why I am posing questions on this list and why I am so
grateful to all those who are willing to share their knowledge and
experience.

So I have taken a seat in the front row of this virtual classroom. Educate
me on what makes a good hull, how to determine if the hull and engine is in
decent condition, etc. I am all ears or, more accurately, eyes. Perhaps
one day soon I can offer something of value in return (I'm working on that).
