Hi Mike,
The "solution" for that, is to assume that the engine is shot, when you buy
the boat and plan on replacing it. You make some excellent points--and the
fact is that very few people who buy boats have any idea what they are doing.
A good engine survey takes the better part of a day--and maybe more if there
are twins and turboed. Plus it is expensive, and often the buyer thinks if it
runs, it is OK.
I suspect what you see in S. Calif. is representative of most of the world.
With todays "society" there is little emphasis on education of truely good
mechanics or people who can fix things. It is more--throw it away and put in
a new one--its cheaper!.
