Hi John,

Oh boy, you've let the cat out of the bag now, you're a Ham!

As a newbie to the trawler world (we purchased the boat this past June) I
like to ask what your recommendations are re: the installation of a ground
plane. The only transmitter on board now is marine VHF. We will be
installing an HF ground plane during the next haul out. Our intention is to
operate 10 thru 75M while cruising WA, British Columbia and perhaps AK.
Also, do you have antenna and tuner preferences for afloat installations?
We have a Kenwood TS 480 that is earmarked for the boat. Thanks for any
insight you can offer.

Unlike the armed forces, "Captain" in the Merchant Marine is not a title
except while serving as such aboard a boat. Certainly, having a license
does not a captain make. As with Hams, anybody can be (and are) taught how
to pass a multiple-guess exam; I know several hams who think a final is
something you take in school. As with all other occupations, some captains
are good; sadly, many are not. Or, as an old mentor once said, "There are
plenty of starters and stoppers, but damn few engineers."
