We have a programmable VDO tach which is driven by our original mechanical
drive on our 1974 Detroit 6-71.
Works perfectly and gives a very steady reading.
In addition we have a Navman digital tach driven by a single piece of
reflective tape we put on the aft accessory drive shaft with the pickup
sender about an inch away. This is also steady and accurate. We can run the
engine up or down by as little as 5 rpm's or so when under load with our
digital driven throttle servo.
No need for custom adapters or other fancy mods to alternators, etc. Many
good off the shelf items are available from VDO and others for little money.
As always YMMV..
