T&T: Fuel Tank Configuration

The PO of my GB 49 Alaskan took out the original leaking fuel tanks by
cutting them into peaces. Then replaced them with multiple aluminum
tanks so they could be installed without removing the engines. The port
and starboard side both have 7 tanks all connected by 2" piping. Works
great.

Unfortunately I must replace our 400 gallon aluminum diesel fuel tank.
It is a single tank that feeds two main engines and a generator.
Because of entry way limitations it will be necessary to use three
separate tanks to reach the same capacity. The tanks can be plumbed
together to give a single tank image to the engines and generator or
they can be separately dedicated to the engines and generator. For
simplicity I am leaning toward plumbing them together. There will be
fewer deck fills, fewer weight balancing issues, etc. What am I
missing? Should I be considering the separate tank approach more
seriously?
All comments are appreciated.
