T&T: How to clean out outboard cooloing system?

I once had a 9.9 Suzuki that got clogged up for lack of rinsing out with 
fresh water.  I was able to fix it by poking several inches of a thin 
braided steel cable into the telltale water outlet and wiggling and 
spinning it around until the salts were loosened.
