These numbers were raised when comparing against paying $805/mo for a slip:
> That's my point. My mortgage is $2300/mo. Not including insurance or
> taxes.
> That buys a lot of Maintenance
>> A older 1br -apartment- in so-so neighborhood in Santa Clara CA (Silicon
>> Valley) starts at about $1300/mo. A nice one is about $1700
We also need to consider the cost of financing a boat, or the loss of income
if you have your cash in the outright ownership of the boat. This number,
added to the $805/mo, at 6% pa interest is about $1000/mo for a boat worth
$200,000.
So the cost of living in a $200,000 boat is more than a nice 1br in Santa
Clara, but less than in a $500,000 somewhere.
And then there is boat insurance vs renters insurance vs home owners
insurance.
Over five years of cruising the east coast I found that marina costs can be
minimized, if not eliminated, by untieing the dock lines. We would slowly
move north or south with the seasons, anchoring out or finding free town
docks*.
