T&T: smart wye

Well, since my thread on swivels and shackles is about to play out and we're
in the process of flogging fire extinguishers and autopilots to death, figured
I'd open a brand new, fresh can of worms.

I wired my boat for 240. Heavy loads- washer/dryer, scuba compressor, ro
watermaker, home depot water heater-- run on 240. Light loads--
air-conditioners, raw water pumps and the usual sundry items are balanced out
over the 2 120 legs.

If I'm in a non-50 amp marina, I'll just have to use the genset if I need it.
Meanwhile, I bought a 50 - 2 x 30 "smart" splitter. Supposedly if I plug it
into 1 30 dock outlet, the other leg won't be hot.

Question is- just how smart is it? Will it out smart me? Say there's one 30 a
outlet on the dock. I know my reefer and aft air-conditioner are on leg x. I
plug the splitter into my boat and the 30 a cable into leg x and plug into the
dock box. Will the brain decide that I shouldn't get 30 120 into the boat? I
know it's supposed to keep me from electrocuting myself. Do I have to have 2
30 a circuits for the thing to work?
