T&T: Chain to rope (was Swivel)

Gary,
There are other forces involved than just the boat revolving arounf the
anchor.
I have an Ideal windless (has a vertical capstan - the chain gypsy thus
being parallel to deck - which feeds to a chainfall into the anchor well).
This looks like a very common setup. Something (I suspect the path the chain
takes) puts enough twist in the chain that not only does it the chain hockle
over time in the locker but it UNLAYS the chain to rope splice as well.
This is at the end of 100' of chain.
I have tried both the 'standard' three strand splice and the 'fancier'
splice given in Brion Toss's book "THE COMPLETE RIGGERS APPRENTICE". This
splice involves unlaying the strands and then laying them back in on the
otherside of the chain. It looks very neat and does not add bunk to the
splice.
However, after a while the rope either in back of the splice hockles and
twists open!!
I gave up and lengthed the chain rode.
