'Lo All,
I am a firm believer in having all the manuals for the equipment on
the boat. Some engine manuals are kind of generic and some are
specific. Owners manuals are rather generic, and can usually be found
on eBay and such places; they usually cover several years/build
numbers. (A build number is the specific data pertaining to the parts
installed in a specified group of serial numbered engines.) Service
manuals are usually less generic, but not really specific to a
particular build number. The Cummins service manual I have covers
several years as indicated by the write-ups that say that the
pictures are representative of the general installations. Parts
manuals are specific to the year, model and build number, or more
simply, the serial number as someone has already said. I picked up
all the manuals for the Celestial on eBay except the parts manual,
which I got directly from Cummins. Be careful to get ones that cover
your engine. You can ask the seller what the copyright date on the
manual is and get a fair idea of how close it will be to your engine.
You should also have the service manual for your transmissions, which
may be quite generic as many "service manuals" are little more than
owners manuals with illustrations (not parts drawings with part numbers).

Take care and be safe.
