T&T: Aluminum anodes

I have recently noticed advertisements and seen aluminum "zincs" for sale,  I 
believe they are supposed to last longer yet give protection in salt water. I 
 have never tried them and wonder what experience list members may have using 
 them?  Are they a special grade of aluminum?
