Local knowledge (read: rumour) here at AYB in Great Bridge has it that the
current 6' draft limit on this section of the ICW will be lifted as soon as a
tug tows the "Spirit of Nantucket," currently blocking most of the channel
at Pungo Ferry, northward past here to Norfolk. This is supposed to happen
within the next 12-24 hours, so that deep-draft boats such as Seahorse, can
proceed southward.

The story circulating here is that a shaft seal failed on the "Spirit" and
her bilge pump(s) could not keep up. It will be interesting to see what type
of seal it was, why it failed and why the crew and/or ship's equipment was
incapable of stopping/coping with the ingress of water. Good thing the water
depth in the ditch is only 9-10 feet.

Another rumor is that CG closed the waterway earlier today after their 41
footers were repeatedly waked by sportfish and other idiots passing by at speed
while CG were in the process of taking passengers off the cruise boat. Word
is that names were taken and, for once, offenders will be sorry for their
sins. Too bad it takes the cops being waked in order for justice to be done.

Regards,

John
