I love wooden boats.
I love fiberglass boats.
I love steel boats.
I love aluminum boats.
I love concrete boats.
I love all boats big and small.
Would you have all plastic furniture in your house if it was
available....probably not.
Why?...it is not warm and comfortable. It has no character. It is cold and
"plastic like". It is common. This is why I like wood boats. For
character and warmth. My boat is a composite..meaning it is constructed
with wood and epoxy. Is it perfect...no. But it is the right boat for me
at this time.
Do boats, other than wooden boats, have any wood in them? Why...it can
rot, get worms and termites!:>)
I can't say I prefer wood boats because all types of boats and all shapes
and sizes appeal to me in some way. I don't say wood boats are best to
maintain. I like working with wood because I am good at it (45+ years of
daily experience) and have owned 8 wooden boats. I like working with
fiberglass and have owned 6 glass boats..it is challenging. I like welding
and have owned two steel boats. I have never owned a concrete
boat/ferro-cement but I know someone who does and it seems to stay afloat
and provide a home for him and his wife..right Norm? Maybe this would be a
good time to suggest a ferro-cement dingy? One was built in 1848
http://www.concreteships.org/history/ .
All boats must be maintained. Wood must be protected, cores must be kept
impenetrable and fiberglass must have water barriers or they will saturate
and deteriorate. Worms, barnacles, blisters, rot, leaks, you name it...a
constant battle!
But worth the fight.
Choose your passion and go boating.
