T&T: MSFT Vista and Nobeltec (was Wireless Air Cards)

In my Windows Vista setup, Nobeltec Visual Navigation Suite ver 8.1.2002,
runs and checks for updates from the Nobeltec site. It does the check for
GPS units, but I didn't have a GPS for it to find. You may have to run the
network version checka couple of times if you have a firewall in place.
I understand that the software update function doesn't work correctly and
the Nobeltec web site says that Vista is unsupported at this time.
Tides and Currents runs. Do be careful of the change in daylight savings
time that kicks in on March 11 or so. Windows Vista knows about the changes
in the starting and ending dates of daylight savings time and Windows XP SP2
systems with automatic updates installed should have the DST patch
installed. Other machines won't know that DST is three weeks early and one
week later this year.
Coastal Explorer, version 1.1.61, from Rose Point Navigation Systems works
as advertised. Software updates works and GPS search and acquisition over a
serial-to-USB cable from Radio Shack works as advertised.
Vista a good choice for an operating system, but some systems still lack
device drivers. Vista comes with a whole plethora of out-of-box device
drivers for printers, but not all. Also, many laptops require special
software for toggling between the built-in screen and the external monitor
which has to be provided by the manufacturer. In my case, an older Sony
VTN-250P, the manufacturer has not yet made available the special
hardware-specific device drivers.

I agree and have converted to Vista. My smarter friends who have converted
are having problems with some programs running properly. I will wait until I
can be shown that Vista works with my Nobeltec and other programs.
