The problem with using these types of boosters on boats is 
feedback.  If the external antenna is too close to the internal 
antenna, the internal antenna picks up the amplified signal from the 
external antenna and amplifies it again.  The result is that the 
electronics of the booster are fried.  I have been told by a dealer 
that the external antenna needs to be 60 feet from the internal 
one.  I don't know many trawlers that could accomplish that separation.
