Maybe it's only the West Coast but I commonly hear the commercial  
folks out here discuss meeting or passing situations by describing  
the event with running light color ie:  "Ok skipper, will pass Red to  
Red"  or  "Green, Green" or some other version that is easy to  
understand.  Works for me and we use it when meeting or overtaking  
tugs & tows.  Problem w/ the T&Ts is it is often difficult to see the  
log tows (no or limited freeboard) and in the narrower channels they  
start their turns a long ways back before their intentions are really  
evident.
