On a recent trip to Alaska I noticed a lot of good looking aluminum
fishing boats and some cruising boats. What are the pro's and cons of
aluminum as a material. I can think of a few cons besides
electrolysis. In colder climates I was wondering about condensation.
Is this a problem behind headliners and paneling?
There are a couple builders that I know of who build Aluminum
Catamarans and monohulls and they seem to be using surface drives in
greater numbers. I am thinking this is because of the lightness of the
aluminum platform can utilize the speed resulting from these types of
drives. I have never liked stern drives and have had mixed results
with these in salt water. Is the surface drive more robust and less
vulnerable to electrolysis? or just for designs meant for maximum
speed? Just some thoughts that I was wondering what the listee's
perspective might be
on Aluminum and surface drives.
