It seems that the IALA specs haven't been updated or in some cases even
published that bring them up-to-date with the emergence of the Class
B units
among other glaring deficiencies. It even appears that the AIS group
hasn't
yet found where it sits in the hierarchy of the enav system that the
IALA
has mandated.
I don't know exactly what this means but trying to get a copy of the AIS
spec that seems to have been done in 2006 as edition 3 vs. the commonly
available edition 1.3 from 2004 doesn't seem possible for this
layperson..perhaps others out there have better sources...if so I'd sure
like to share them :-)
In the meantime we still appear as a mere "shadow" to most Class A
transponders. It appears that it is a software issue in the display
software
vs. a firmware issue in the transponder itself.again this is a bit of
conjecture on my part but looks pretty valid at the moment.
Sooooo, my advice for the moment is to hold off on the purchase of
one till
the issues have been resolved. Just because they finally pass the FCC
wouldn't mean they can be heard!
As always YMMV..
