T&T: 10 KW Northern Lights Genset.. And the horizontal oil filter.

Mine is the same on my Westerbeke. To drain it, take a nail, ice pick, etc. 
and poke a hole in the top of the filter. This will allow at least some of 
the oil to drain back into the engine. Then do the Ziploc bag thing. That's 
about the best I can come up with. I don't even bother trying to prime the 
filter like I used to with my cars. That would be especially hard with my 
upside-down mounted Lehman filter!
