Whilst cruising the Panhandle in 1970 with Alaskan friends, my wife, and I
went ashore to explore an old cannery site. Since there was another party
ashore with barking dogs, I did not take a shotgun with me. After returning
to the boat, I was reprimanded by my Alaskan friends about not having a
firearm with me. My reply to that was, I can out run my wife, which
immediately gained me honorary Alaskan male status.........the down side
here is even after 37 years, the admiral has not yet forgiven me.

The next day, we met a pair of brownies on the beach...the ten bore shotgun
I was carryring seemed suddenly inadequate, but like most bear encounters
the bears did a 180 with us doing the same. Today, we use the canister air
horn, and see no bears.
