During my military service I spent a very cold winter at Ft. Churchill, CA.
The community was build astride a polar bear migration route for some strange
reason best known to the Canadian army. Over the years the bears discovered
that the garbage dump provided a more convenient food supply than braving the
frigid waters and hunting seals. When food at the dump ran low, they prowled the
town in search of unlocked kitchen larders. Not that a lock would stop a two
ton bear for long. Every night the RCMP and the army would run patrols, trap or
tranqualize wandering bears, and release them ten miles out of town.

Now all I worry about is deer eating my wife's begonias, racoons tipping over
the garbage can, and coyotes munching on the neighbor's cats.
