T&T: Titanium cookware (was Cast Iron Cookware)

Arild,

we have a titanium soup pot (Scanpan from Denmark < http://
tinyurl.com/2lzv2o >) with a glass cover which we use quite frequently.

While it has a "lifetime guarantee, and we have had it for about 3
years, there appears to be a coating of some sort inside that seems
to bubbling up. The size of the defects is like the size of pimples
that teenagers get.

The bottom of the pot has a metal base that is probably not titanium
because it leaves a black mark on the shelf where it is stored. I
clean it every so often using a scouring powder but only lasts one or
two washings. It goes in the dishwasher nearly all the time, but
sometimes, it still needs a manual cleaning...

The Admiral likes it because it has a clear cover, but otherwise. she
is not impressed.

It probably conducts heat faster, and cools quickly, but a good
stainless pot with an aluminum core would probably be just as good.

It is lighter than a cast iron pot, but cleaning it is a different
experience

If titanium was the "mother lode" of cooking metal, than I wonder why
I do not see more pots and pans made from it. I walked into
Bloomingdales some years ago into their cookware area and found only
one small shelf with some titanium pots on it. And, none at William
and Sonoma.

And, I would have to question why it is being sold at a standup stand
@ a supermarket.

It may all be a gimmick, with some potentially questionable science
and claims behind the concept.

Also, thanks for the long post on cast iron cookware

By coincidence a cookware sales booth was set up at the local
supermarket today. I asked the rep there about energy savings. He
claimed their titanium coated non-stick cookware would save 35%
compared to cooking with cast iron. Somehow I doubt that figure! A
more realistic value might be around 15 - 20%; but then again,
maybe??? Hmmmm! Anybody have any hard data to contribute? Arild
