T&T: cold tar epoxy

Hi Rich-

I've used coal tar epoxy (available from many paint companies), but only on steel boats and they were salt water boats.

The results, that I have seen, is that the product (on steel hulls) will need touched up in places, each year and periodically stripped and reapplied. Not sure why and I haven't pursued it since on a steel boat it is easy to prep and reapply the coal tar on the few spots that need it, yearly.

For fiberglass, unless it is an emergency repair and temporary, I tend to think that the more common epoxy barrier coatings are better suited for long time use. In spite of my willingness to trying things that are not "contemporary" thinking, this is one time I would use the more accepted techniques, at least until I further investigated.

Of course, I may be drawing the wrong conclusions and a discussion with a manufacturer of one of the brands of coal tar epoxy may support the use for a stripped fiberglass hull. If you go this route, let me know what the outcome is.
