I used this technique twice on the Illinois river in the past.

My experience, a stout anchor is required, and I could never to get  
it to hold more than about 30 degrees off of "in line" due to the  
thinness of the bottom (my guess).

Could on Lake Michigan.

Had an all chain rode, and a 66 lb delta.

But, in the end, found that I slept better if my stern was tied to  
the shore, my delta was out with a 7-1 scope, and I had a smaller  
danforth with a chain-line rode tied off to the amidships cleat on  
the side current was coming from.

never needed the danforth but it was insurance.
