T&T: Raw Water Strainer

 You defiantly want strainers. I can't believe the impeller chewing bits
and pieces I find trapped in the strainer when checked monthly.
In the North East, all sorts of barnacle friends find their way into the
strainer housings and grow into hard and sharp calcium.
If your budget is tight, find some used boat parts shops in your area,
most of the strainers I have seen even after 20 years are in great
shape.
