An inexpensive suggestion to ease re-installing the water pump gasket
and cover: get a couple of long screws (1 inch or so) of the
same thread size as the cover screws, and cut the heads off them.

When replacing the cover, first install these two cut-off screws in
two of the mounting screw holes. You can then hang the gasket and
cover plate on these screws while you install the normal cover screws
in the other positions. Once the cover is secure, replace the cut-off
screws with the proper ones.

These things may also help taking things apart - if you replace one or
two of the normal screws with these studs, they will prevent the cover
from falling into the bilge as the last screw comes out.
