John, I'd agree with Tom.  Anytime you have an
isolated area of heat in an electrical system where
uniform temperature is expected you should look for a
less than perfect connection.  In your case, this
could be the physical connection between battery
cables and battery, the crimped connection securing
the terminal lug to the battery cable or the internal
connection between the battery post and battery.
