In a previous boat I installed a small Espar hydronic heater in a (gasp) 
sailboat. Over a period of two years of trouble, including paying a 
dealer's tech travel time and hour$$ to verify the installation, I never 
got the thing to run more than about two days without needing some 
little $250 part. I finally removed the unit, smashed it with a hammer 
so no one would try to use it, and hooked the heating loop up to the 
engine cooling. Result: reliable heat when the engine ran, and no heat 
otherwise.
