T&T: NC Marina

I agree the Albemarle Sound is not fresh-fresh water....Fresh Water is
relative to the salinity levels and western ALBEMARLE SOUND salinity depends
on wind, water drainage and drought conditions. According to NC State
University, "The western Albemarle functions as a freshwater system except
during extreme drought. Due to the drainage of fresh water from higher land,
salinity generally decreases as you move upstream." I agree that the eastern
Albemarle Sound is more brackish but with a salinity level of 3-5 ppt
western Albemarle Sound is "relatively" fresh by the normal measurement
scale of the five salinity zones which are: fresh-0.5; 0.5-5.0; 5.0-15.0;
15.0-25.0; and >25.0 ppt. According to other published studies, "The
Albemarle Sound estuary is a large, shallow, bar-built lagoonal system.
Tides, current speeds, and circulation patterns are primarily wind driven.
Salinity structure in Albemarle Sound is most influenced by seasonal
freshwater discharge. The Roanoke and Chowan rivers (which are not far from
where I am located) are the two major freshwater sources into Albemarle
Sound. Salinity is typically no more then 5 ppt and vertically homogeneous,
but may exhibit higher salinities and greater variability near Croatan
Sound."

No way is Albemarle Sound fresh water. Have you ever seen all the
crab traps? Crabs require at least brackish to survive. The trip
across the Sound from the Pasquotank River to Alligator River can be
a real mess, and not just because of the weather.
