<<reminds us that coming online at an engines rated rpms and
assuming a full load within the 10-second window specified in NFPA
standard 110 and Canadian CSA 282 requires maintaining engine
temperature between 100F to 120F>>
NFPA is the National Fire Protection Association. It seems like this warm
engine recommendation is for fire and emergency equipment that needs to be
ready to depart on 10 seconds notice. I can't see keeping your engine at
110 degrees all winter so that you can get underway instantly on the rare
occasion. If you're really that worried about the slight amount of engine
wear that occurs during a normal startup from 40-50 degrees F, you could
always use 2-stagees of heat. Keep the 40 degree heater on all winter, and
have a second, larger heater for startups. Turn this large heater on when
you arrive at the boat. By the time you're ready to depart, the engine
should be nice and toasty.
