Keith,

The Journal For On Site Power Solutions includes the following:

"Wayne Bass, market manager, engine and industrial distributors, for
Kim Hotstart, which supplies heaters to Generac Power Systems Inc.,
Katolight Corp., Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, and Kohler, among
others, reminds us that coming online at an engines rated rpms and
assuming a full load within the 10-second window specified in NFPA
standard 110 and Canadian CSA 282 requires maintaining engine
temperature between 100F to 120F. Bass also maintains that, in
addition to easier starts, block heaters save engine warm-up time and
help reduce fuel, plus engine wear90% of which he attributes to low
water jacket temperature. Scott Phillips, technical communicator for
the Power Systems Division of Wagner Equipment Co., a Caterpillar
distributor in Albuquerque, NM, agrees. 'On large engines, where the
pistons may be 6 inches across, starting dry and cold makes for wear.
Starting at 100F to 120F youll have oil pressure, which means less
metal to metal.'"

Additionally the following is on the marine section of the Kim
Hotstart website:

"By keeping the engine at operating temperature (1000F or higher),
The engine will not emit white smoke on start up."

Today I also emailed the marine contact, Ted Smet, at Kim Hotstart.
His response:

"For marine I usually recommend 100-120F. For anything in the northern
states. Down south 80-100F. "

If you have any information that suggests a lower recommended
temperature, please contact me.

Thank you,

That seems awfully hot. I thought those things were only supposed to
keep
the engine slightly warm. Hope you're not cooking the thing!
