An alternative to the block heater that is inserted through one of the sand
core plugs is an inline thermo siphon style block heater. These are simply
a heater inside a case with a water inlet and outlet. The thermosiphon
effect comes into effect because hot water wil rise and cool water tends to
stay low.
In cars this device is usually cut into the heater core lines. Lacking a
heater core in a boat installation use any plug that is located near the top
of the block. For example a unused temp sensor and the bottom connection can
be the block drain plug. If you want to retain the ability to drain the
block, use a Tee fitting.
For best results the hot line should be at one end of the block and the cold
line at the opposite. But any close approximation is also useful.
This alternative may be useful if you cannot find a block heater with the
correct diameter core plug size.
