NEWINGTON, CT, Feb 22, 2007 -- The ARRL is seeking comments from
amateurs concerning development of an open-source (non-proprietary) data
communications protocol suitable for use by radio amateurs over
high-frequency (HF) fading paths. This is not a Request for Proposals
(RFP). An RFP may or not be forthcoming depending on evaluation of the
information received.

If anything were to come of this, it could be considerable benefit to
the cruising community. If you have the technical expertise to
contribute fine, if not but you have a use for this, this may be
something to keep an eye on.

The HF bands are pretty dead at the moment and until they open up again,
which may be another year or more, traffic and use may be stagnant.
WxFax transmissions have been really hard to pick up over the past year
or so.

Regards,
Mike
