lining up objects are the first thing i do when i set anchor, but i agree 
that the GPS tracks can be very useful too.

i also set the cursor when i drop anchor (using the remote windlass switch 
at the upper helm) and monitor the distance read out.  it's very accurate 
and will register the wind gusts when the chain lifts.  this is very useful 
when anchoring at night when you have few bearings.
