I have used the back splice type of rope to chain splice for over 30 years. I
have anchored on this splice for well over a thousand nights and in winds up
to 90 knots.
A sample of the technique is at:
http://home.cogeco.ca/~mquill/chain_rope_splice.html This type of splice was
tested by U S sailing: with 1/4" chain it was at 79% breaking load of the 1/2
inch line, and with 5/16" it was at 85% of the breaking load of the 1/2" line.
I am not aware of comperable objective testing done on the weaving thru the
chain splice. I did some semi objective studies last year, after this was
discussed on this forum. I felt that there was greater risk of the splice
failing with the weaving thru the chain--but the only method I had was to move
a SUV with a come along up a 4% grade, and it didn't fail.
The back splice works and holds well over what your anchor will hold.
